Dreamworks’ newest film, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, is a fast-paced adventure following the famous cat as he embarks on his newest adventure. This may seem like a children’s movie but I promise you there is more than what meets the eye! Puss in Boots had his first film over a decade ago and has been featured in multiple Shrek films, but this film takes the cat’s character for a turn.

When the famous cat discovers he has run out of spare lives he embarks on a journey to a mythical wishing star in hopes of restoring his lost lives. With only one life remaining, Puss learns to value his friends and life more accepting the fact that he will one day meet his demise. This film although targeted toward children contains a mature central theme about accepting death and valuing the time you have.

There are also multiple scenes in the film where Puss’ anxiety is shown: for example, he has a panic attack, and this does a great job of representing what it’s like to struggle and overcome anxiety. The film also shines with its stunning visuals, it’s made to look like a fairytale and it embraces being animated. This allows the movie to focus on creating creative movements and designs rather than focusing on realism often seen in Disney’s animated films.

Another visual effect that is played with is the frame rate creating impressive fight scenes and movements. Last but not least this film shines in its unique cast of characters from Goldilocks and the Three Bears to a wolf representing death itself! All the characters have unique traits, motives, origins, and designs that make them all different and interesting.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is a film that although targeted at kids can be enjoyed by all ages, this movie has a great message and characters that almost anyone can relate to. If the story of a children’s movie doesn’t pique your interest then the visuals still make the film worth watching, the whole film is eye candy! Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is one of if not the best-animated movies of 2022 and is worth seeing on the big screen!
