Here are some of the best movies to watch to get you into the autumn spirit. 

1. Hocus Pocus (1993)

This fantasy-comedy movie follows a boy and his sister as they accidentally resurrect three witches, and must find a way to save their town from them. Taking place during Halloween and being a childhood favorite to many, it’s a perfect fall movie to watch with family to get you in the mood for Halloween.

2. Coco (2017)

Miguel wishes to become a musician, just like his town’s hero Ernesto de la Cruz. There’s only one issue: his family banned music. On the Day of the Dead, Miguel accidentally gets transported to the Land of the Dead. During his stay, he must team up with his ancestors to find out the truth behind his family’s ban on music. From the time period to the character designs, this is another great movie to watch with your family during Fall. 

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Do you want to feel festive for both Halloween and Christmas? Luckily for you, this movie combines themes from both holidays to make an interesting and entertaining story about Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Town. Upon his discovery of Christmas Town, Jack decides to have the citizens of Halloween Town put on Christmas instead of Halloween. 

4. Coraline (2009)

This eerie film follows Coraline, a young girl who’s struggling with having just moved into a new apartment as well as her relationship with her parents. During her exploration of her new home, she discovers a secret door. One night, she decides to go through the door, and is greeted with versions of her parents that act caring towards her and neighbors that are enjoyable to be around; all of which have buttons for eyes. This all seems amazing to her, but is it too good to be true? 

5. The Addams Family (1991)

Upon the return of his long lost brother Fester Addams, Gomez Addams is thrilled to be reunited with him. After the family spends more time with Fester, they begin to suspect that he isn’t actually Gomez’s brother. From their macabre aesthetic and lifestyle to their unconventional family activities, nothing screams “spooky season” more than this iconic family.

6. Ghostbusters (1984)

After three scientists get kicked out of Columbia University, they use their understanding of the paranormal to capture ghosts across New York under the name “Ghostbusters”. As they begin capturing ghosts across the state, they discover a gateway to another dimension. Faced with the interdimensional demon known as Gozner, the Ghostbusters must find a way to save New York. 

7. Beetlejuice (1988)

Adam and Barbara, two ghosts, live happily in their countryside home when a family suddenly moves in. After their attempts to scare the family away fail, they turn to Beetlejuice, a malicious poltergeist. 

8. Scream (1996)

One year after the murder of Sidney’s mom, her and her friends begin receiving strange phone calls, followed by more murder cases around town with one similar feature between all of them: the presense of a white mask. Sidney later finds out that she’s been receiving calls from the person responsible for the killings, but to worsen matters, there’s only two suspects: her father, and her boyfriend. 

9. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

When Nancy sleeps, she dreams of a man with knife “claws” trying to kill her. She later finds out that her friend group has been having dreams with the same clawed killer. After members of the group start being killed in their sleep, Nancy must find a way to stop the dream killer once and for all. 

10. Halloween (1978)

On Halloween of 1963, a 15 year old girl is stabbed to death by her 6 year old brother, prompting him to be placed in a mental institution. On the day before Halloween 15 years later, Michael Myers escapes the institution and returns to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois and plots to kill a group of high schoolers. Upon finding out that he escaped, his psychiatrist Sam Loomis must find a way to stop him before it’s too late.
