The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently announced a delay in the enforcement of REAL IDs. The cause for delay was due to COVID-19 as there was a backlog during this time with applications.

Starting on May 7, 2025, if you are flying within the U.S., it is required by federal law that you have a passport or a REAL ID compliant license. This will eventually be relevant to us because if you ever fly within the U.S., more than a driver’s license will be required.

A REAL ID is similar to a regular ID. The difference is that a REAL ID has a star in the corner and the standard ID has “not for REAL ID purposes” written on it. To get a REAL ID, you will have to go to an NJMVC agency. There you will have to provide many proofs of address and identification.
