Music is a way for many of us students to escape the monotony of everyday school life, and though it seems to be a way for us to while the time away faster, and to enjoy our daily activities more, such an enhancement can hinder our mind and give way to a rather insidious dependency.
By that, I do not intend to bring up the fact that certain types of lyrical music can cause overstimulation and in doing so, negatively impact the learning process, but rather that we have forgotten as a society that the music of daily life is enough to live with. This may seem to be an abstract thought at first, but if you think about it, there is really some comfort, some familiarity in the sounds you hear on a day to day basis, for example, the sound of the bus interface loading up and the tone that plays when it does, the incessant joint cacophony that is created in the Aux. Gym during lunch when it’s a cafeteria. These things are what makes life what it is, and they’re the construct that supports our understanding of our surroundings.
We take such things for granted, and we don’t realize that drowning out our surroundings takes away some of the most indispensable moments that we can experience. Being able to sit amongst others, in a crowded cafeteria, and just take in the atmosphere in its entirety is something much more valuable than sitting amongst others, in a crowded cafeteria, and listening to the same music that we’ll have access to for the rest of our lives.
We only get one shot at high school, and I think that we’re all better off knowing that there’s something to be seen in every instant, whether in this school or any other environment. There’s something special about every individual moment we experience, however uneventful the day may be.
