As the final whistle of the season echoed across the field, the varsity girls’ soccer team closed out a year defined by grit, growth, and unforgettable moments. After fighting their way to the semi-finals against Lawrence Township, the team walked off not just as competitors, but as a family. For the seniors, especially, this postseason run marked both an ending and a celebration of the years of dedication that they poured into this sport. Among those seniors, with 5 goals and 10 assists, Abby Atkinson’s skill and leadership were impossible to miss. The team’s 15-8 record shows their determination to win, and what a great season it truly was. We interviewed Abby to get an inside look at the team’s perspective on their season.
Was there a game that felt like a turning point in the season for you or the team?
Our Holmdel game was definitely a high moment in our season. We won 1-0, and we were picked as their senior night. As a team, we felt belittled because of the way we were perceived throughout the Shore Conference, but we came out with high energy and determination. It was probably one of our best games. Our possession was dominant, passing was good, our control over the game, and our overall momentum pushed us forward.
How has soccer shaped you over the years, on and off the field?
Throughout the past four years, we faced so many ups and downs and challenges, and it has definitely made me a more resilient person. I learned to notice my mistakes and learn from them, and as a captain, I grew in my leadership role, motivating the team and trying to put them in the best possible position for success.
What were you thinking when you realized how far your team had made it this season?
Honestly, all I could think was “damn.” I couldn’t really wrap my head around the fact that we as a team have come this far. I felt so proud as a captain. We had very little recognition, but with the unwavering support of our coach, we were able to finally put ourselves on the map.
What is one memory from this season that you’ll never forget?
One memory I’ll never forget is the state quarter-finals. We won 5-0 against West Windsor and 7-0 in the previous game against Long Branch. It was great momentum going into the semifinals, where our season unfortunately ended. However, it was the furthest I’ve ever made it in the season, so it felt like a milestone for the team. I see this as a chance for the team to grow in future years, even though I won’t be playing for this team anymore.
What will you miss the most about playing for this team?
The connections and friendships I made over the years will be what I miss most. Some of my very best friends are on this team, and being able to play with them all the time was one of my favorite parts of high school. Our team felt like a family, and I know that these are the friends I’ll have for the rest of my life.
